About > My Techniques

Currently my range includes collage, painting, and printmaking; specifically, linocut block prints. I can create customized orders of any of these, so if you're interested, please have a look at my custom work page or simply contact me with any questions.

Collages

Collage example

My collages are not collages in the traditional sense, but more what I like to call "painting with paper." I paint the majority of my background with acrylic paint, then cut out paper leaves individually to create foliage. I then compose a bird from carefully trimmed layers of paper and accent it with ink and paint details.

I like using paper in my work for many reasons: it adds texture and depth, I like vibrant pattern and crisp edges, and often papers have small flaws which add character to a piece.

Papers that I use include cardstock, scrapbooking paper, wallpaper, silhouette paper, and a prized stock of origami and chiyogami papers brought to me from Japan as a gift from my inlaws.

Paintings

Painting example

I started painting after a desire arose in me to produce something with a cleaner, more graphic look than what I was achieving in my collages. My initial paintings were very colorful and simple, with crisp lines. As I work more with acrylics, my paintings are becoming more detailed.

I now paint on a variety of surfaces, including canvas panels, gallery wrap canvases, and wood plaques.

Linocut Prints

Linocut example

Linocut is a type of block printing in which the artist carves a raised area on a sheet of linoleum, representing a reflection of the design to be printed. Once the carving is finished, ink is applied to the surface of the linoleum with a roller (called a brayer) and then pressed onto paper to create the desired image.

I typically prefer to make one-color linocut prints because I like the simplicity of the resulting image. Simple linocut prints, grouped on a wall, can create a striking arrangement.
